In tears, two Leicester City players were knocked out.

Leicester City sent seven players to the World Cup, but only two have advanced to the knockout stages following the latest round.

On another dramatic day in Qatar, Daniel Amartey and Ghana were knocked out of the World Cup, leaving only two Leicester City players in the knockout stages.

Ghana needed a point from their final group game to advance to the knockout stages, but they were defeated 2-0 by Uruguay, failing to avenge their exit from the South American country 12 years ago, when Luis Suarez’s controversial handball denied them. Uruguay, on the other hand, was denied due to South Korea’s injury-time winner over Portugal in the group’s other game.

With Amartey out, only James Maddison and Papy Mendy remain of the seven City players who traveled to the World Cup. They face each other as England takes on Senegal in the last 16 on Sunday evening.

Ghana had gone into the game in the second spot in the group and had a glorious chance to take an early lead when Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet was adjudged to have fouled Mohammed Kudus in the box. But Andre Ayew, the only remaining player in the Ghana squad who played in 2010, produced a tame penalty that Rochet saved.

Uruguay punished Ghana quickly. Amartey should have done better for the first goal, failing to clear a cross that Suarez then hit goalwards, Lawrence Ati-Zigi saving but with Giorgian de Arrascaeta nodding in the rebound. The second came when Suarez dinked the ball over to the left, with de Arrascaeta volleying in.

In the second half, Amartey escaped without conceding a penalty when he got the slightest toe on the ball for a reckless challenge on Darwin Nunez. Eventually, Ghana started to create chances to score the two goals they needed, with Antoine Semenyo guiding a shot wide and Kudus seeing one saved by Rochet.

As time ticked on, news then came through that Wolves forward Hwang Hee-chan had netted an injury-time goal for South Korea to put them 2-1 up, meaning Uruguay needed to score again, otherwise they would be out on goals scored. That led to an end-to-end final few minutes as both teams pushed forward.

Both had chances, while Edinson Cavani had a strong penalty waved away, but neither side could find the net, and both were eliminated. Uruguay was furious at the final whistle, chasing the officials off the pitch. Suarez was in tears on the bench.

Amartey follows Danny Ward, Youri Tielemans, Timothy Castagne, and Wout Faes out of the competition at the group stages, meaning he should be back in contention for City’s first Premier League game when football resumes. They host Newcastle on Boxing Day.
