James Maddison’s claim sums up what everyone is thinking following the World Cup snub.

England supporters up and down the country, whether affiliated with Leicester City or not, are frustrated not to have seen James Maddison in action at the World Cup.

The City star, who has scored seven goals and assisted in a further four in the Premier League this season, did not get a single second of time on the pitch at this year’s World Cup. England boss Gareth Southgate has come under plenty of criticism for leaving Maddison out.

Comedian and ‘Three Lions singer David Baddiel has perfectly summarised the nation’s thoughts on Maddison’s exclusion in a Twitter thread, reflecting what many fans of both Leicester and England are feeling about the situation.

“I agree with all the assessments about how England played well, no shame to lose to France, etc,” said Baddiel of Football’s Coming Home fame. “But two words: James Maddison.

“Not just last night. Should have been developed as a playmaker for England from about three years ago, leading up to his crowning glory last night where he showed Antoine Griezmann how to do it.

“My basic position is: I agree Gareth Southgate is a decent fellow who’s changed the culture of the England team in a positive way. But I might prefer it if he was a total wanker who picked Trent and James Maddison and won.

“Or if winning and decency didn’t sometimes feel incompatible in international football.”
