Graeme Souness is “mystified” by James Maddison’s decision amid the Newcastle transfer rumors.

Latest Leicester City news from LeicestershireLive as Graeme Souness talks about James Maddison and the World Cup amid Newcastle United transfer speculation

Pundit Graeme Souness is ‘mystified’ by James Maddison’s situation as the midfielder continues to be linked with a transfer to Newcastle United.

Leicester City turned down two bids for Maddison from Newcastle in the summer, insisting their star midfielder was not for sale. Since then, Maddison has been in the form of his life, with seven goals and four assists in 13 Premier League games this season.

That form convinced England boss Gareth Southgate to take Maddison to the World Cup in Qatar this winter, though he did not get a single second on the pitch for the Three Lions at the tournament. That’s something that has baffled pundit Graeme Souness, who expressed his frustration in his column for the Daily Mail.

“If only England had been a little bit more adventurous in their football,” Souness wrote, “it might have been a very different outcome.

“I’m mystified why James Maddison, a player whose creativity and scoring stats stand out over everyone else they took to Qatar, was neither seen nor heard of. And don’t tell me Maddison won’t do the hard yards playing for England.”

While unconfirmed, City will be hoping to have Maddison back for the trip to Newcastle, of all places, on Boxing Day when they resume their Premier League season. Before then is a game against MK Dons in the Carabao Cup this midweek, but that may come too soon for the England man.
