Newcastle United is edging closer to signing Marcus Thuram from Borussia Monchengladbach, according to 90Mins.

Newcastle is far from the only side interested in signing Thuram, with the striker’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.

But the Magpies’ are said to be the keenest side on bringing him in during the January transfer window.

Thuram impressed in the World Cup final, after entering the field during the first half after France’s disastrous start to the match.

Thuram’s energy and quality helped his nation come back from two goals down to take the final all the way down to penalties.

Thuram getting closer to Newcastle

His performance on the grandest stage may well have been part of the reason why Newcastle appear now to have been convinced to make their move.

The Magpies are said to have already held talks with his representatives, which have progressed positively so far.

It means that Newcastle is now in a good position to strike and bring Thuram to St. James’ Park in January.

Indeed, 90 Mins suggests Newcastle will be making a bid in the near year – as they look to beat the likes of Inter Milan and Juventus to his signature – provided the player still wants to go through with the move.

If Thuram, who has previously been called ‘world-class’ (Get German Football), was to join Newcastle he would add further depth to Howe’s attacking options.

While it seems unlikely that the 25-year-old would walk straight into Newcastle’s starting line-up, his ability to play up-front or out wide makes him a useful option.

And considering he could be available on a cut-price fee, due to his contractual situation, it appears to be a transfer that could make a lot of sense for Newcastle to complete.
