Former Tottenham Hotspur striker and talkSport analyst Darren Bent believes the club would reject any offer for Harry Kane in the summer, even if the player does not intend to sign a new contract.

Kane has had a productive start to the season thus far. After scoring twice in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace in midweek, the 29-year-old now has 16 goals this season (Transfermarkt).

Kane’s form this season has put him in a position to become Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer very soon as well. Kane’s 264 goals are only two short of Jimmy Greaves’ record (Goal).

Kane is a Spurs legend. However, whether he finishes his career with the club remains to be seen.

With his contract set to expire in 18 months (Transfermarkt), and no word on a new deal being signed at this stage, there is a chance Kane could leave for free at the end of next season.

According to Bent, however, Spurs would rather let Kane leave for free than actively sell him to a rival regardless of the transfer fee.

He said: “Daniel Levy would say no. That’s the problem you’ve got. Because £70 million for a guy who’s got a year left is bonkers. But for someone of that quality you go, okay.

“I think Daniel Levy would let him go for free. Man United bid £70 million and Chelsea bid £80 million. Is he going to sell Harry Kane to Chelsea? Absolutely not.”

Spurs Online Opinion

It’s unthinkable, but I’d rather see Kane depart for nothing than the club accepted an offer from a rival for him. To do so would be such an admission of inferiority, and furthermore, even if Kane did decide to run down his contract, you can be sure he’d give it his all until the bitter end.
