Liverpool are expected to sign a £65 million “genuine deal” who would be a significant upgrade above Fabinho.

Since last summer, Liverpool has been widely associated with a transfer for Moises Caicedo, and a new update on the club’s pursuit of the player has surfaced.

What’s the most recent news?
According to The Mirror, Liverpool are among the Premier League teams interested in signing the Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder.

According to the source, Brighton has reduced their asking price to £65 million, with Newcastle United and Chelsea also interested in signing the player in 2023.

It is reported that the lower price tag will be well greeted by the powers that be at Anfield as they attempt to rebuild the squad’s midfield group, with Jude Bellingham also identified in the newspaper as a priority target for Liverpool.

Huge Fabinho upgrade

The pressure to improve performances on the pitch is verging on overwhelming for Jurgen Klopp, especially after the disappointing display against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup third-round on Saturday night that has left the side subjected to a replay after a 2-2 result at Anfield.

Liverpool are also currently sixth in the Premier League – seven points adrift from the top four – whilst being knocked out of the Carabao Cup and facing a challenging two-leg clash with reigning champions Real Madrid in the Champions League next month.

As a result, the signing of Caicedo over the current transfer window could be exactly what Klopp needs to add depth and star quality in the centre of the pitch ahead of the second half of the season.

Over 16 top-flight appearances this season, the 21-year-old – who was hailed the “real deal” by journalist Tim Vickery – has scored one goal and registered one assist while creating two big chances.

He has been dominant in possession, with an 88% pass completion percentage, 1.4 interceptions, 2.9 tackles, and 5.8 duels won per game.

As a result, the arrival of the young Ecuador international might provide Klopp with a significant Fabinho boost.

This season, his defensive qualities in midfield significantly surpass those of the Brazilian ace, who has not been at his best, with the player’s form having “fallen off a cliff,” in the words of Redmen TV’s Ste Hoare.

So far in 2022/23, Caicedo has outscored Fabinho in numerous aspects, including tackles and interceptions (70 v 48), successfully tackled opposing players (73.3% v 44.4%), shot-creating actions per 90 minutes (2.21 v 2.14), ball recoveries (99 v 91), and aerial duels won (67.9% v 56%).

With that stated, after missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni last summer, the Liverpool management should have learnt their lesson and be more proactive in their midfield recruiting plan in 2023.

Losing Caicedo might also be a setback for the club if he continues to grow and develop elsewhere.
