Leicester City’s position on selling Newcastle target James Maddison today

Newcastle United has been linked with signing James Maddison from Leicester City, but it looks like the midfielder is going nowhere.

According to the Athletic, the Foxes are unlikely to sell any of their key players on transfer deadline day. That includes Maddison, who has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park for months.

He was a target for Dan Ashworth during the summer, who saw two bids rejected for the 26-year-old.

But Newcastle’s interest did not end then. It was reported throughout late 2022 that Maddison was going to be the Magpies’ top target during the January transfer window – despite the fact he would not be cheap and financial fair play remained an issue.

Maddison’s involvement at the World Cup only got Toon fans more excited, as it meant he was spending week after week in the company of Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier, and Nick Pope. They reportedly told their England teammate all about life at Newcastle and the new project at St James’ Park.

But for all the chat, a move to Tyneside has not emerged for Maddison. And the Athletic state that he is going nowhere on deadline day.

The late claim that Newcastle target James Maddison could leave Leicester

The Maddison rumors have been swirling all weekend – despite the fact that there have been no fresh reports regarding a move to the North East.

In his weekly newsletter for the Independent, Miguel Delaney reported that a move away from Leicester for Maddison could happen. He wrote: “If there’s one big deal left to be done in the last few days of this window, it is James Maddison.”

This got Newcastle fans excited, with many on social media believing that a late deal was on the horizon. That is despite the fact that Delaney did not write that. He merely said that a transfer away from Leicester could happen, but not necessarily to Newcastle.

Now the Athletic have reported on Leicester’s stance, and believe that they are incredibly unlikely to let Maddison go before tonight’s 11 pm deadline.

That is a shame for Toon fans, but he will likely be a target once again when the summer transfer window rolls around.
