Kieran Trippier responds in three words to Tottenham’s surprise deadline-day call.

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier posted ‘good luck bro’ on Instagram after Matt Doherty’s contract at Tottenham Hotspur was terminated and he secured a deadline day move to Atletico de Madrid.

Heading into transfer deadline day, the main talk at Spurs was whether the club could get this deal for Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon over the line after threats of it breaking down.

Of course, it was expected that at least one of three current Spurs right-sided wing-backs would leave on deadline day because it would just be unhealthy to have four on the books at the same time.

It was logical for Djed Spence, who had played no more than 90 minutes under Antonio Conte, to secure a loan move away from the club, and he did so by joining the French side, Rennes.

Then the surprise talk of Doherty possibly joining Atletico de Madrid started to emerge on loan, and then bang, with one hour left of the January transfer deadline, Doherty’s contract was terminated at Hotspur Way.

Not many expected it and the Spurs fans were shocked by the call, but in less than no time, Atletico de Madrid was posting clips of Doherty on their Instagram, with Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier posting in the comments section ‘good luck bro’.

Come the summer, there were going to be 12 months remaining of Doherty’s contract and he was expected to leave sooner rather than later, so this move was just delaying the inevitable, even if it was ruthless.

Pedro Porro’s arrival meant that he would be the main man, whilst Spence, whether Antonio Conte is here or not, is seen as a long-term option.

Therefore, the futures of Doherty and Emerson Royal were up in the air, and now that the Republic of Ireland international is out of the door, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Brazil international follows suit in the summer.
