A round-up of your latest Newcastle United-related transfer rumors

Your Newcastle United transfer round-up is for Wednesday, February 7.

Newcastle has been linked with a move for Brentford’s Ivan Toney as they eye up a long-term replacement for 30-year-old striker Callum Wilson. And now it seems that the door has opened for the Magpies to snatch up the Bees forward in the summer window.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano told his Caught Offside daily briefing: “There will be a chance to leave for Ivan Toney in the summer but only if the right proposal will arrive, Brentford will not sell for a ‘normal” price.”

Eddie Howe’s side would be confident of being able to out-muscle most other Premier League clubs in a bidding war, but of course, will not want to pay over the odds unnecessarily. Toney sits third in the top-flight’s goalscoring charts with 13 strikes and three assists to his name, with only Harry Kane and Erling Haaland finding the back of the net more times than the 26-year-old this term.

Newcastle’s inability to sign a midfielder in the January transfer window has led Howe to admit that his squad is relatively light in that position. It is therefore no surprise to hear of the Magpies’ renewed interest in James Maddison, a reported long-term target for the Tyneside club.

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle will make a concerted attempt to sign the Foxes man who will be in the final year of his contract at the King Power Stadium next season. However, Manchester City is also believed to be interested in the 26-year-old as they prepare for the potential departure of Bernardo Silva.

A mouth-watering transfer free may well decide Maddison’s future, with both Man City and Newcastle looking to battle it out as the Premier League’s financial heavyweights. The pending investigation on Pep Guardiola’s side could well have just given the Magpies the upper hand in any potential bidding war.
