Eddie Howe’s revealed his view on plans to expand St James’s Park.

Strawberry Place has been purchased by Newcastle United. Former owner Mike Ashley sold the plot of land behind the Gallowgate End of the stadium to developers four years ago, but the project, which was controversially approved by Newcastle City Council planners, ran into problems.

And, with unprecedented ticket demand, the land purchase should now allow the stadium to be expanded on that side of the stadium.

The club has yet to confirm the deal, but Howe was asked about it ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League game against his former club, Bournemouth.

“I think I’ve said many times that St James’s Park is an incredible place to play football, and to be a part of that experience every week is fantastic,” United’s head coach said.

“Anything we can do to enhance that for supporters, I’m fully behind. So, yeah, if there’s an opportunity to expand and make it bigger, I don’t think they’d have a problem selling the tickets they have now – and making the opportunity for people to come and watch us even better.”

Last year, Newcastle co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi revealed the club’s new owners’ determination to expand St James’ Park.

“We’ll look into expanding it,” Ghodoussi told The Athletic. “We’re working with the city and council to see what we can do. There are many things that must happen first, but that is the path forward.
