Player insists he made the “perfect decision” to leave Tottenham Hotspur

Steven Bergwijn has stated that he is pleased with his decision to join Ajax last summer and that his recent form has not been as bad as it appears.

Bergwijn returned to Dutch football in the summer, two and a half years after leaving Spurs, with Ajax paying €31.25 million (£26.8 million) for him.

After a couple of difficult years at Tottenham, the 25-year-old would have hoped to get his career back on track in the Eredivisie, but things have not gone as well in Amsterdam as the winger would have hoped.

While his statistics this season are impressive, with eight goals and four assists in 19 Eredivisie matches (Transfermarkt), the vast majority of those came in the first few months of the season.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man has not been in the best of form since November, but he believes he has improved as a player since joining Ajax.

Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad (16/02/23 as translated by Sport Witness), Bergwijn described the move as the “perfect choice” and went on to add: “I learn every day and get better at Ajax. Football is not always on the rise. Nobody expected it to topple over like that, not even me.

“Obviously, if you don’t win seven games, you try to get the best out of yourself, but that’s difficult if the team isn’t running. We were just talking about it in the locker room the other day. None of us have had such an experience.

series.”

The Netherlands international insisted that he is unconcerned about the criticism he receives, stating that he is only concerned with helping the club win trophies.

“I’m used to it by now,” the winger said when asked about his critics. The reviews vary greatly. It’s all black and white.

“I’m the best when I score a lot and otherwise, I can’t do anything about it. When things went well and I was sent things, I already said: keep an eye on it.

“I’ve never been a high-scoring player. I came solely to win prizes. That would be fantastic if I ended up being the top scorer. If not, it makes no difference if we’re on the Museumplein. That is the most crucial.

“I did not sign up for this after I started. Opponents only adjust to you more, and you realize how critical it is that the team runs.

“I believe it’s close together and I can put down another series soon. The Eredivisie’s top scorer has eleven goals. I have eight [goals] on the wing. Isn’t that a good start?”

Spurs Online Opinion

I have to admit that I thought Conte underutilized Bergwijn, and I expected him to rip the Eredivisie apart when he returned. However, while that has not yet occurred, the £27 million we received for the winger appears to be a better and better deal with each passing week.
