‘Great fit’: TalkSport duo back 49-year-old for Tottenham manager job instead of Pochettino

Ally McCoist and Laura Woods agreed that Thomas Tuchel would be a ‘great fit’ for the Tottenham Hotspur manager’s job, with the latter even stating that he would be a better option than Mauricio Pochettino.

There is a lot of talk about Antonio Conte’s future at Tottenham and many are expecting the Italian to leave at the end of the season.

Conte has recently been back home in Italy resting after surgery, but he is back in the dugout for Tottenham’s all-important Champions League second-leg tie against AC Milan on Wednesday night.

After getting knocked out of the FA Cup recently, this becomes an even bigger game because the mood around Hotspur Way has been indifferent this term.

Even though the Spurs are sitting fourth in the Premier League table, there is a feeling that they haven’t progressed under Conte, but most importantly, the style of play doesn’t suit their needs.

As a result, a new face could arrive at Hotspur Way in the summer and Ally McCoist and Laura Woods talked about who that could be, as they told talkSPORT Breakfast (08/03/23).

“I do actually (think it’s a good idea of Pochettino returning to Tottenham),” said McCoist. “Yes, I think that’s fair (on Tuchel being the other outstanding manager).

“But I think the vast majority of Spurs fans loved Pochettino. He didn’t win anything. I think they were a very good side and easy on the eye.”

Laura Woods added: “I just don’t know whether it’s good to go back. I know we can look at others that did go back and it did go well. Mourinho going back to Chelsea and all that. I don’t know, for Mauricio Pochettino, whether it would be the best move for him.

“I think Thomas Tuchel would be a great shout. I think the manager’s that come back into the league that has got something to prove. I mean like Conte, funnily enough. Look what’s happened there.

“But seriously though. With Thomas Tuchel. In the small space of time that he came into Chelsea and arranged that team. They had a lot of young talent. Made a few changes and they won the Champions League. I think that type of personality that he has to go into a team like Spurs, who look like they are devoid of enjoyment, at the moment. I honestly think that would be a great fit. I love Thomas Tuchel. I think he is amazing.”

POCHETTINO SHOULDN’T RETURN

It could be argued that since Pochettino was sacked by the Spurs. The duo has either stood still or gone backward.

There hasn’t been any real progression, especially from Tottenham’s side and it could get worse in the summer, that’s if Harry Kane leaves.

Throughout Pochettino’s reign, there was talk about a lack of trophies. Well, fast forward to the present, and two trophy-laden coaches later, that trophy still hasn’t arrived.

And that star striker, now about to hit 30, might have to leave for another Premier League club in order to put medals on the table.

If you were Tuchel, who recently won the Champions League, would the 49-year-old want to take that role when the Bayern Munich and Real Madrid jobs could become available?
