Rio Ferdinand has told Leicester City supporters they “deserved” to be goaded by Ben Chilwell after he scored for Chelsea at King Power Stadium on Saturday.
The left-back came through the academy at Leicester City and became a first-team regular before joining Chelsea in a £ 50 million move during the summer of 2020.
Chilwell scored the opening goal of the game as Chelsea beat Leicester 3-1 at the weekend, inflicting a fifth defeat in a row on Brendan Rodgers’ men. Until he scored, the 26-year-old was receiving boos and jeers from the Blue Army after the manner of his departure left a bitter taste.
When celebrating, Chilwell ran toward Leicester fans and cupped his ears, responding directly to the reception he had been given to that point. Talking about the moment, Rio Ferdinand has said he is “glad” Chilwell did it and that City fans “deserved” his response.
“They boo him,” Ferdinand told FIVE. “I watched the game there last year. They got 50-odd million for this kid, a left-back right, out of Covid, and they are booing him.
“But they got more than they probably should have got for him. He did a great job there, and they are booing him for going to Chelsea.
‘It doesn’t make sense. So good, I’m glad he did that, give them a bit back, they deserved it. They should respect him.”
