Tottenham ramp up interest in AC Milan star who was instrumental in their Champions League demise

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan is one of a number of goalkeeper targets Tottenham could sign this summer, according to reports.

The 27-year-old played an instrumental role in helping his team knock Spurs out of the Champions League last Wednesday, a performance that has not gone unnoticed.

Spurs are keen to sign a new keeper this summer to replace Hugo Lloris and Maignan has the potential to be an excellent addition.

Indeed, according to reputed journalist Ben Jacobs, the Milan shot-stopper is one of several options that Tottenham is keeping a close eye on.

Writing for CaughtOffside, Jacobs said: “Spurs are looking to replace Hugo Lloris. They have [Brentford’s] David Raya on their radar.

“Valencia goalkeeper Giori Mamardashvili is another name pretty high up on the list of possibilities.

“Milan’s Mike Maignan was also watched closely in Tottenham’s loss to Milan, and his late save from Kane’s header in injury time to stop the tie from going to extra-time won’t have gone unnoticed.”

Replacing Lloris will not be an easy task for any new addition, though, as overall, the France international has been one of Tottenham’s most important players since joining the club in 2012.

However, despite Maignan attracting interest from several European clubs, AC Milan is unlikely to let the Frenchman leave easily this summer.

Indeed, the shot-stopper has been one of the Rossoneri’s most important players since joining the Italian giants in 2021, making 52 appearances across all competitions so far – helping his team to 23 clean sheets.

According to Transfermarkt, AC Milan valued Maignan at approximately £35m. But, with his contract valid until 2026, they are under no immediate pressure to sell, so an even higher offer may be required for Spurs to acquire his services.

Furthermore, Tottenham would probably have to qualify for the Champions League in order to stand any chance of attracting players of his quality.

Antonio Conte’s side currently sits in fourth place in the Premier League table, but the likes of Newcastle, Liverpool, and Brighton have played fewer games and are hot on their heels.

What seems almost certain, though, is that Lloris will be leaving at the end of the campaign, with the 36-year-old making several costly errors in key games this season.

Fraser Forster has put in some admirable performances recently after the Frenchman was sidelined with an injury in February. For instance, in Spurs’ recent 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest, he made some fantastic saves, including an Andre Ayew penalty.

The England international is certainly making a strong case to be Tottenham’s new number one, but in all likelihood, Daniel Levy and co will be looking to bring in a new shot-stopper, with Maignan on their radar.
