‘Wouldn’t be surprised’: Merson says Daniel Levy could offer 43-year-old manager Tottenham job

Paul Merson has written in The Daily Star that Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy could offer Brighton and Hove Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi the managerial role at the end of the season.

The former Arsenal star believes that if De Zerbi impressed between and the end of the season, then Tottenham could make a move for the 43-year-old Italian manager.

Brighton could finish in the top four of the Premier League table this season.

The Seagulls are also in the FA Cup.

According to The Telegraph, De Zerbi will be on a list of managerial candidates considered by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy should he decide to move on from Antonio Conte at the end of the season.

PAUL MERSON ON ROBERTO DE ZERBI AND TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Merson wrote: “I consider Brighton to be a major player in both the FA Cup and the race for Champions League football. That’s how highly I rate the work of Roberto De Zerbi.

“Tottenham will be watching the Italian in Brighton’s final stretch of the season, there is no doubt about it. They will want to see how he fares under pressure.

“The difference is when you get a top job like Graham Potter at Chelsea, you’re faced with scrutiny every single week. If you finish mid-table at Brighton, everyone is happy.

“If De Zerbi delivers between now and the end of May, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him offered the Tottenham job ahead of Mauricio Pochettino.”

HITC VERDICT: IT COULD HAPPEN

Now, we know that Roberto De Zerbi has done well at Brighton and Hove Albion since replacing Graham Potter earlier in the season.

And he could well be tempted to leave Brighton for a bigger club such as Tottenham at the end of the season.

The 43-year-old’s football at Brighton is brilliant and hugely entertaining.

Brighton does not have the best squads in the Premier League, and that De Zerbi is able to work wonders with the players he has at his disposal is surely going to be appealing to Levy, who does not tend to spend big on players.
