Which transfer ‘targets’ should Newcastle United look to sign this summer – and which players should they avoid?
Newcastle United, as they have been for the last few transfer windows, have been linked with signing a huge range of players in the upcoming summer transfer window.
With all these links comes a huge debate in the fan base and on social media about which players Newcastle should look to sign when the window opens.
Of course, with that, also comes a huge swell of opinion about which players Newcastle should not be targeted for a move this summer.
Here, we take a look at a selection of players that have been linked with a move to Newcastle United this summer and judge whether or not the Magpies should pursue a move for them.

1. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
Kavaratskhelia has been simply superb for Napoli this season and is one of European football’s hottest properties. No matter the price, the Georgian is someone the Magpies should break the bank for if given the opportunity to sign. Verdict = target.
2. James Maddison
Maddison has continued to impress for Leicester City this season and he seems like a perfect fit for Howe’s team. Capable of playing out wide or in the middle of midfield, Maddison could be the spark Newcastle needs to push on next season. Verdict = target.
3. Jesse Lingard
Newcastle was heavily linked with a move for Lingard before he joined Nottingham Forest last summer. He has had an indifferent season at the City Ground and has done very little to convince Newcastle they should sign him when the window reopens. Verdict = avoid.
4. Jack Harrison
Harrison looked like someone that would really benefit Newcastle and their style of play when reports of their interest emerged last summer. However, the addition of Anthony Gordon in January means a winger is not a priority this summer. Verdict = avoid.
5. Joao Palhinha
Palhinha has been great for Fulham this season after a £20miliion move from Sporting Lisbon this summer. The Portuguese international could act as a No.6 in Howe’s system. Verdict = target.
6. Kieran Tierney
Newcastle United has been linked with a move for Tierney and everything about a potential deal just makes sense. He can play at left-back or as a makeshift center-back if needed, is Premier League proven and is someone that isn’t getting game time at their current club. If Tierney is allowed to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer, then Newcastle should be making inquiries over his signature. Verdict = target.
7. Antonee Robinson
Both Manchester City and Newcastle have been linked with a move for the USMNT defender. He has been very solid for the Cottagers this season and is someone that would improve the options at Howe’s disposal. Verdict = target.
8. Renan Lodi
Newcastle is in the market for a left-back this summer and has been linked with going back in for Lodi – someone they were extensively linked with last summer. The Atletico Madrid man is currently on-loan at Nottingham Forest but hasn’t shone like many might have anticipated. Verdict = avoid.
9. Mason Mount
Mount is a very divisive figure in football with his impact in games often going unnoticed as he tends to do all the ‘unfashionable’ work. He has entered the final 18 months of his current deal at Chelsea and could be on the move this summer. Liverpool and Newcastle have been credited with an interest and whilst he would be a good addition to Howe’s squad, his wages could prove prohibitive to a deal. Verdict = avoid if wage demands are too high.
10. Raphinha
Raphinha has had a disappointing spell at Camp Nou, however, if he is able to replicate the stunning form he showed for Leeds United last season, then moving for the Brazilian could be a shrewd move for the Magpies – if they are able to get a good deal for him. Verdict = target but only at a reasonable price.
11. Scott McTominay
Reports of Newcastle’s interest in McTominay have certainly split the Newcastle United fan base with debate raging on social media about whether a move for the Scotland international would be a good option for the club. McTominay reportedly has a price tag of around £ 30 million and whilst he would provide heaps of Premier League experience, that price may put the Magpies off a move. Verdict = avoid at the reported price.
12. Dele Alli
Newcastle was linked with a move for Alli before he joined Everton in January 2022. Alli is now at Besiktas but has reportedly been frozen out of the team. Verdict = avoid.
13. Moises Caicedo
Caicedo has been attracting attention from across the footballing world as he continues to shine at the Amex Stadium. Brighton is a notoriously difficult negotiator however and a deal for the Ecuador international won’t come cheap, particularly after he signed a new deal with the club earlier this year. Verdict = target on ability/avoid if the price is too high.
