Gary Lineker says what everyone is thinking about James Maddison after amazing England stat

Latest Leicester City news from LeicestershireLive as James Maddison shines on his first start for England

Former Leicester City and England striker Gary Lineker has hailed James Maddison after his performance in the Three Lions’ win over Ukraine.

Goals from Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka sealed a 2-0 win for Gareth Southgate’s men as Maddison played over 80 minutes before being substituted for Jack Grealish.

The City midfielder may not have scored or provided an assist but he played well during his first start for England. According to Opta, Maddison created five chances, the most by a player in his first England men’s start since Theo Walcott v Andorra in September 2008.

And Lineker was quick to recognize Maddison’s performance after the game. The Match of the Day host tweeted: “Such a talented and intelligent footballer. @Madders10”, followed by a couple of hand-clapping emojis.

The 26-year-old was making his first England appearance since a Euro 2020 qualifying win over Montenegro back in 2019. He was selected as part of Gareth Southgate’s squad at the World Cup in Qatar last winter but did not make an appearance.

Maddison has scored nine goals and provided five assists for City in the Premier League this season as he looks to help Leicester avoid relegation.
