Report: ‘Phenomenal’ £42m player wants to leave, with Newcastle keen on signing him

Newcastle United has been linked with signing Kalvin Phillips this summer, and it sounds like he could be available.

Phillips joined Manchester City last summer, but his move to the Etihad has proven to be a disaster. That is why there is already talk of an exit, with Newcastle a potential suitor.

It was recently reported that Eddie Howe would like to sign the 27-year-old, and a new claim from 90min suggests that the Toon boss might get the chance to do just that.

Kalvin Phillips wants to leave Manchester City

According to 90min, Phillips is already willing to leave Manchester City this summer. They state that the midfielder is concerned about his international exploits, and has been warned that he might not be part of England’s Euro 2024 squad if he continues to struggle for minutes.

That could force him to move this summer, as it is incredibly difficult to see him getting into Pep Guardiola’s side ahead of Rodri.

He has proven to be an expensive backup at £ 42 million, and could already be on the move. 90min add that Man City will not force Phillips to stay, and are happy to sanction an exit if that is what he wants.

All roads appear to lead to another transfer, and that could give Newcastle the chance to sign a player they have been chasing since 2019.

Newcastle has wanted him for a long time

Phillips is not a new target for Newcastle. In fact, he has been linked with a move to St James’ Park since the summer of 2019. TeamTalk claimed that the Magpies wanted to sign him from Leeds, much to the delight of the Toon Army.

A move did not come to fruition, but he returned to Newcastle’s radar early last year. There were multiple reports stating that Eddie Howe wanted to sign him, with his Leeds career set to come to an end.

The latter did happen, but it was Man City who swooped in and secured his signature. Since then he has made 13 appearances, with just two coming as a starter.

It would surely be different for him at Newcastle. He could play the number six role in Howe’s side, and that would allow Bruno Guimaraes to push higher up the pitch.

A move would also allow him to play alongside Kieran Trippier, who has waxed lyrical about him in the past. The Toon defender branded Phillips as ‘phenomenal‘, but that is not a word that has been used to describe him over the past year.

He needs a fresh move, and Newcastle is seemingly in the conversation to give him a new home.
