‘Dear me’: BBC pundit stunned by what Conte has now done after Tottenham exit

Tottenham Hotspur is now looking for a new permanent manager after parting company with Antonio Conte.

The Italian left Spurs by mutual consent at the end of last week.

Conte’s future at Tottenham looked uncertain ever since his explosive post-Southampton press conference.

After the 3-3 draw, the 53-year-old let rip toward his players, the club owners, and even the culture at N17.

However, following Tottenham’s decision, Conte sought to mend bridges with a farewell post on Instagram.

He wrote: “Football is passion.

“I would like to deeply thank everyone at Spurs who appreciated and shared my passion and my intense way of living football as a coach.

“A special thought to the fans who always showed me support and appreciation, it’s been unforgettable to hear them singing my name.

“Our journey together has ended, I wish you all the best for the future. Antonio.”

However, BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton didn’t seem to appreciate Conte’s comments.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, the former Chelsea man reacted to Conte’s statement.

“If you were a Spurs fan listening to that… I mean they didn’t like him at the end anyway, but now – blimey,” he said.

“I mean, dear me Conte.”

OUR VIEW

In all fairness, there doesn’t seem to be much – if anything – wrong with Conte’s statement.

He has written a classy farewell note, praising the club and fans, and wishing them all the best.

There’s nothing in Conte’s statement suggesting a parting shot, any snide, or anything like that.

And while the former Spurs boss did split the fanbase at times, there’s no denying he tried his hardest to succeed.

Sadly it hasn’t worked out, and Tottenham is now back to square one.

Perhaps it’s best for the Spurs not to look at established marquee managers for now.

Instead, a young, up-and-coming boss who’s eager to take on a long-term project might be best.

Someone like Julian Nagelsmann, perhaps.
