Everton was reportedly happy to let Yerry Mina depart Goodison Park in the January window, with the Colombian defender deemed surplus to requirements.
However, for one reason or another, the 28-year-old is still on Merseyside, happily running down his contract under Sean Dyche – who seems reluctant to utilize him.
Mina was signed for £ 27 million in 2018 (Sky Sports) and is still at an age where he can make an impact. He’s an international, has previously played for Barcelona, and has bundles of Premier League experience.
Despite his form dipping of late, this should have been an easy sell for the Toffees during the January window. They wouldn’t have been able to get nearly £ 27 million, but upwards of £ 10 million was certainly achievable.
According to Goal journalist, Raisa Simplicio (Twitter, 20 December), Everton was more than happy to let the defender depart. Either she was misinformed or the club made no effort to shift the former Barcelona man out of Goodison Park.
Surely there would’ve been some sort of urgency to recoup a transfer fee? The financial situation has now taken a turn for the worst after the Premier League Financial Fair Play charge, so why was the board so unreactive in the transfer window?
They need to start being proactive and realize where they can save funds and make money back on assets that haven’t worked out. Mina will almost certainly depart for free in the summer and his situation is just another damning indictment of what has been a dreadful couple of years on the transfer front.
