Alasdair Gold explains big rule that Paratici changed in Tottenham

Alasdair Gold has revealed in his latest column in Football London, that Fabio Paratici had scrapped Tottenham’s practice of not handing pay-rises to their academy players.

A few days ago, Spurs were rocked by the news that Paratici’s 30-month ban from Italian football, had been extended by FIFA to all other leagues in the world.

On Friday, the club confirmed that the 50-year-old has agreed to take an immediate leave of absence pending the outcome of his appeal, which will be heard on April 19.

On the back of the news, Gold has now written a column on Paratici’s time at the club, explaining that the Italian was handed a huge amount of power by Daniel Levy.

In the report, the journalist sheds light on one significant rule change that the club’s managing director of football made to the academy set-up.

Gold revealed that John McDermott, who left his role as the head of Tottenham’s academy in 2020, was against pay rises for those in the youth teams as he wanted to keep them hungry to improve.

However, Paratici allegedly ignored that and decided to reward some players in the development squad with a pay rise.

The topic of salaries paid to academy players is a tricky one.

While on the one hand, you do not want to make the young players too comfortable by handing them big contracts, one also has to weigh that against the fact that other clubs might look to poach the talented youngsters away from Spurs by handing them a substantial pay rise.
