Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor believes it is “difficult to say” whether he was faster in his prime than PSG star Kylian Mbappe.
Agbonlahor was asked who would win in a race between him at his career peak and current-day Mbappe. The former Villa forward said it was difficult to decide and referenced one of his goals in claret and blue as proof.
The goal in question came against Arsenal in 2008, when he ran onto a long ball over the top from the halfway line and scored past Manuel Almunia to put Villa 2-0 up in the 80th minute.
Discussing the comparison, Agbonlahor told SPORTbible: “Oof. You know what? It’s very difficult to say because I remember there was a clip from 2008 – I don’t know if you’ve seen it – where I score at the Emirates against Arsenal.
“And I don’t know if I look back at like, maybe, 2008-ish, I feel like he [Kylian Mbappe] would have been a great race because of Mbappe’s frightening speed, isn’t he? So was I, so it’s hard to compare, you know?
“I feel like nowadays they can clock people’s speed but they couldn’t back then. Yeah, so I think it’d be a great race.”
