Newcastle now intent on signing Liverpool target once considered better than top player

Newcastle United wants Perr Schuurs and is intent on making a bid for the Torino defender at the end of the season.

That is according to a report from Italian transfer reporter Gianluca Di Marzio, most prominently known from Sky Italia.

It’s stated Newcastle really like Torino defender Schuurs ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report claims that Newcastle has yet to make an offer but is ‘intent’ on making a bid to sign the center-back.

Torino would allegedly need a big offer to even consider selling Schuurs just a year after signing him from Ajax.

Newcastle will have to spend big to lure Schuurs away from Torino and they’re not alone in the race.

Di Marzio notes that Liverpool is also fancy signing Schuurs this summer.

Tuttosport reported in February that Liverpool has already made a move to sign Schuurs but Newcastle is now entering the race.

Schuurs has excelled in Italy this season and looks destined for big things in the coming years.

The 23-year-old will have plenty of interest but a move to Newcastle may really appeal to Schuurs.

That’s because his friend and former center-back partner Sven Botman are already at St James’ Park.

Botman and Schuurs came up in the Ajax ranks together and spent the 2018-19 season as defensive partners in the Jong Ajax team.

Schuurs was considered to be better than Botman though as he stepped up into the Ajax first team whereas Botman was loaned out to Heerenveen and then sold to Lille.

Botman has ended up becoming the better player now but Schuurs is developing rapidly for Torino.

The pair even featured together for the Netherlands Under-21s as recently as 2021 and have played 27 times together over the years.

Newcastle may want a right-footed defender to replace Jamaal Lascelles this summer and reuniting him with Botman could be ideal.

The pair already know each other very well and could form a strong defensive partnership for years to come having already learned about each other.
