Pundit questions if West Ham fans will want managerial candidate amid recent speculation

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie has questioned if West Ham fans would give Graham Potter time as manager if he replaced David Moyes at the end of the season.

The Hammers are expected to part ways with Moyes at the end of the current campaign despite having one year on his contract, with former Brighton and Chelsea boss Potter considered one of the prime candidates to replace him.

But having struggled to walk into Chelsea and gain any sort of momentum or trust with the fans, McAvennie is unsure how Irons fans would take to him although he admits he would personally love him to come in.

“I don’t think so, no,” he said. “I like him as a manager, but would they want to take a chance on him? The pressure won’t be as bad at West Ham. The fans might like him, but would they give him time?

I’d love him. Wouldn’t bother me if he went to West Ham if David got sacked.

“I’d be disappointed if David gets moved on, but Potter coming in would be great for me. He was brilliant at Brighton so I’d hope he could come in and prove it was the primadonnas at Chelsea and not him.

“He walked into a small group of players at Brighton and then had about 100 people to pick from with names. It’s a big job that he walked into.

“It’s a big job at West Ham too but it’s a smaller group, there are no egos. He doesn’t have to play the superstars. West Ham doesn’t have that, you just play the best team.

“I can understand why they would be thinking about him. It wouldn’t be a problem to me.”
