Tottenham is reportedly looking to complete a double center-back signing from La Liga giants Barcelona this summer in an attempt to improve their fragile defense.
Spurs’ back three has been nothing short of shambolic since the break for the winter World Cup, no matter who lined up for former boss Antonio Conte or the recently sacked Cristian Stellini.
Eric Dier has an impressive first year under Conte but has looked anything like an England squad player, while Cristian Romero’s form has dropped off a cliff since Argentina’s success in Qatar.
The absence of the versatile Ben Davies has been felt, with Clement Lenglet not always looking comfortable while Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga’s cameos have often proven to be error-strewn.
To that end, Daniel Levy is expected to fund a major revamp at the back despite not yet knowing who the club’s new manager will be in the summer.
And according to reports on Wednesday, Tottenham are still expected to turn Lenglet‘s loan into a permanent deal. That’s despite the Frenchman never really showing the kind of form that prompted Barca to sign him in the first place.
But Lenglet is not the only Nou Camp defender being chased by the club, with former Chelsea man Andreas Christensen also on their radar.
The Denmark international is viewed as a ‘perfect’ fit for Spurs, given his Premier League experience and the fact that he has performed at a high level for the runaway LaLiga leaders this season.
Barca’s financial struggles could lead to Christensen’s exit
Barcelona’s ongoing financial struggles have led to them identifying valuable assets that could be sold to balance the books this summer. And the fact that Christensen arrived for free and is now worth a considerable amount makes him a prime candidate to move on.
At this stage, however, the report does not mention whether the player himself is keen on the transfer.
Christensen made over 160 appearances for the Blues but consistently found himself in and out of the side due to the high turnover of players at Stamford Bridge.
However, given the lack of high-quality defenders at Tottenham, he would almost certainly be one of the first names on the team sheet week in, week out
Tottenham will have it all their own way in the chase for the 27-year-old though, with Newcastle also known to be keen on striking a deal.
The north London side, with Ryan Mason now at the helm, is back in action on Thursday night when they welcome Manchester United in the Premier League, looking to bounce back from their mauling at Newcastle last weekend.
