Tottenham players to refund fans after Newcastle thrashing

Tottenham Hotspur’s footballers have pledged to refund ticket-holders who watched the club capitulate to a 6-1 loss at English Premier League rival Newcastle United on Sunday.

Tottenham conceded five goals in the first 21 minutes of the game as the team’s hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League through a top-four finish in the Premier League disintegrated.

Hundreds of the club’s fans exited St James’ Park before half-time to embark on a 300-mile journey back to North London.

“As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger,” the players said in a statement. “It wasn’t good enough. We know words aren’t enough in situations like this but believe us, a defeat like this hurts.

“We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind, we would like to reimburse fans for the cost of their match tickets from St James’ Park. We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us. Together – and only together – can we move things forward.”

Such a move is rare, but not without precedent.

Arsenal and Sunderland are among English football clubs to have offered fans refunds or free entry to another fixture following a heavy defeat in recent years.

According to a report in The Sunday Mirror – 23/04, p74, Tottenham Hotspur is considering a move for Rennes center-back Loic Bade this summer.

Bade joined Nottingham Forest on loan last summer ahead of the club’s first foray into the Premier League but the move proved to be a disaster for the center-back, who did not play a single minute for the Steve Cooper’s side.

The Ligue 1 club decided to cut the spell short in January and loaned the defender out to Sevilla for the second half of the season instead.

Bade has fared much better since his move to Spain, establishing himself as a mainstay in the La Liga club’s backline.

The Frenchman impressed in Sevilla’s Europa League win over Manchester United last week, even finding the back of the net for the Spanish side at the start of the second half.

The Sunday Mirror have now claimed that Bade’s performances in Spain have caught Tottenham’s attention, with the North London club allegedly considering making a £10m move for the 23-year-old in the summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given Forest’s defensive struggles this season, the fact that Bade failed to make a single appearance for the club in the first half of the campaign, is certainly not a ringing endorsement of his quality.

There is no doubt that Spurs need reinforcements at center-back in the summer but one would expect the club to go after players of a higher caliber than the Rennes man.
