Football Insider has crunched the numbers and revealed that Tottenham’s revenue could fall by a whopping £87m if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Tottenham’s 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Newcastle United has left the North London club’s hopes of finishing in the top four hanging by a thread, with the Magpies and Manchester United now sitting six points clear with a game in hand over the Lilywhites.
To make matters worse, Spurs now look on the verge of missing out on Europa League qualification as well, with Aston Villa and Liverpool battling for those spots.
Football Insider reveals that it is not just the prize money from the Champions League (for each win and each round) that Tottenham would miss out on but the club would also take a hit to their commercial revenue.
This is because the club’s agreements with their prominent sponsors include step-down clauses in the event of failure to secure European qualification.
The report adds that Spurs would also miss out on matchday income of up to £6m per home game on European nights, with their total drop in revenue thus expected to be around £87m.

Missing out on the Champions League would be a major blow and would certainly impact our summer transfer budget.
Given that we are likely to be competing against the likes of Newcastle and Man Utd for some of the same targets, not having CL football to offer would also be a major handicap in attracting top players to the club.
