Cristian Romero has received backlash in recent weeks for his below-par Tottenham Hotspur performances and Jamie Redknapp believes he could cost his side against Liverpool
Jamie Redknapp has named Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero as the man Liverpool’s frontline should target on Sunday afternoon.
The Argentine – who helped his country win the World Cup in December – has come under criticism for poor performances in recent weeks. Last weekend, he was part of a Tottenham backline that shipped in five goals to Newcastle United in the opening 20 minutes.
Spurs appeared headed for another demolition against Manchester United in midweek but rallied in the second half to earn a 2-2 draw. Romero has, however, gained an unwanted reputation for discipline issues since his big-money move from Atalanta in 2021.
A whopping 10 yellow cards – as well as two reds – has led to Tottenham supporters growing frustrated and, earlier in the campaign, he was vilified for pulling Chelsea defender Marc Cucerella’s hair. Defensive fragilities have cost the North London outfit in recent weeks, with a string of managers changing between a back four and a back five.
And former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder Redknapp believes Romero could be a weakness when the two sides go head-to-head at Anfield. He told the Sky Sports’ Essential Football podcast: “Defensively, I worry about them. They’ve conceded too many goals. Romero looks like he’s giving away goals every game with mistakes.
“He’s too rash. Every time I watch him I think he’s going to get sent off. And this is the sort of game (against Liverpool) where you can see him making a mistake again.”
