Everton face anxious wait on influential striker ahead of Wolves clash

Early injury and team news as Wolves prepare to face Everton in the Premier League

Wolves could face an Everton side who are without their England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was taken off at halftime of Everton’s 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester City with a tight groin, leaving the club to monitor him ahead of the game at Molineux.

Toffees boss Sean Dyche is hopeful Calvert-Lewin will be fit but told evertontv: “Dom got a tight groin and quite obviously I can’t take a risk on that so we had to change that at half-time. Hopefully, that will settle down quickly. We’re hoping it’s a precaution. He felt his groin but nothing too drastic so I said, ‘Right, that’s it’, because of his record.

“He was touch and go whether he wanted to carry on but I said I had to make a call on that and took it out of his hands, so hopefully that’s going to be effective over the next few days and he’s ready to go again.”

Calvert-Lewin’s return from 11 weeks out with a hamstring injury has boosted Everton’s chances of staying up. The target man has played in their last five games during which time they have picked up a win and two draws.

That includes winning and scoring a penalty in the 2-2 draw at Leicester and impressing in the 5-1 win at Brighton.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian left-back Vitalii Mykolenko is also a doubt after missing the Man City game with a thigh problem.

Dyche added: “We lost our left-back [Mykolenko] the day before the game, which is not perfect. We’ll see with Myko. We’ll see how it settles over the coming days.”

Wolves go into the game already safe after their 1-0 win at home to Aston Villa on May 6. But the game is a huge one for Everton’s Premier League prospects.

Dyche’s side finished the weekend just one place above the relegation zone, one point ahead of Leeds. They are only two points clear of second-from-bottom Leicester who play their game in hand tonight when they are at home to Liverpool.

After Saturday’s game at Molinueux, Wolves go to Arsenal on the final day, May 28, while Everton is at home to Bournemouth.
