Manchester United remain interest in Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Harry Kane.

The Times claim Manchester United have Harry Kane as a top transfer target this summer, pending ability to actually pay transfer fees if a takeover goes through.

Kane has been having a strange season for Tottenham. Their campaign has been miserable, but he has been absolutely prolific.

He has struck 28 Premier League goals, close to his best ever of 30 in 2016/17, and an improvement on his 17 league striker last season. However, after defeat to Brentford at the weekend, Tottenham are down in eighth place.

Harry Kane final home game

The weekend saw Tottenham play their final home game. The 3-1 defeat summed up their woeful season and the players’ lap of appreciation for fans after the final whistle looked like a humiliating experience.

Caretaker boss Ryan Mason was forced to deny after the game that Harry Kane waved goodbye to supporters.

Mason told The Telegraph: “He waves at the crowd every season. I saw him waving two years ago and you guys were convinced he was leaving. He was just thanking the fans as he does every season.”

While it is impossible to tell Kane’s intentions from his actions, Mason likewise does not know for sure either.

Kane has a decision to make and so do Tottenham. He has only one year left on his contract. The Times claim Spurs want £100 million – although Ben Foster believes they may settle for a sale at £70 million.

It is also possible Kane waits a year and leaves as a free agent in 2023, but does he really want to waste another season?

Tottenham are trying to show some appreciation for Kane. They unveiled a mural for him outside the stadium. But Kane can also interpret this as a leaving present – if he wishes.

Manchester United are close to securing Champions League football for next season. Tottenham are currently on course to miss out on Europe altogether.

This all adds to the compelling case to switch sides. Only by the end of the upcoming transfer window, will we truly know whether Harry Kane’s wave was a ‘goodbye’ or not.
