Why Huddersfield Town loanees are promotion lucky charm as Wembley beckons again

Aaron Rowe will be hoping to be involved for Stockport County in the play-off final this weekend, and if victorious he would continue a streak of promotions by Terriers loanees

Having a Terriers player in your squad is something of a lucky charm for League Two sides going for promotion, it seems: the way the play-offs have gone this year means there is a chance of making it four years in a row that one of their youngsters has been part of a promotion-winning side.

Rarmani Edmonds-Green was part of the Swindon Town side that won League Two in 2020, Ben Jackson was on loan at Bolton Wanderers as they went up automatically the following year, and last year Kian Harratt opened the scoring for Port Vale as they romped to a three-goal victory over Mansfield in the play-off final.

Victory for Stockport County over Carlisle United on Sunday lunchtime would continue that trend, with versatile wide man Aaron Rowe now hoping to emulate his Huddersfield Town teammates by helping his side claim victory at Wembley.

The 22-year-old has barely featured since moving to Edgeley Park on loan in January, playing just two regular league games, but Rowe made it off the bench for the final eight minutes of their play-off semi-final first-leg clash with Salford City.

Stockport lost to the only goal of the game that evening but staged a dramatic comeback on Saturday afternoon to clinch the chance to claim back-to-back promotions. Isaac Oloafe’s goal midway through the second half forced the game to extra time.

Salford thought they had won it through Stevie Mallen’s deflected strike eight minutes from the end, but Jack Stretton equalized again just moments later before Dave Challinor’s side won on penalties.

Stockport ended an 11-year spell in non-league by winning the National League last season, and victory over Carlisle would put them back in the third tier for the first time since 2010.
