Coventry City play-off news from CoventryLive as League Two Wembley hero Michael Doyle sends a message to former teammate

Former Coventry City captain and Wembley hero Michael Doyle have sent his old midfield sidekick Liam Kelly a good luck message ahead of this weekend’s play-off final with Luton Town.

The duo was once the driving force in the Sky Blues midfield and key components in the club’s rise from League Two to the third tier, culminating with the 2018 play-off final victory over Exeter City.

Now, virtually five years on to the day from that memorable occasion, Doyle is backing Kelly and his charges to take the club to the Premier League.

Asked about his old midfield partner, Kelly said: “He sent me a message congratulating me on making the final and wishing me all the best with one game to go.

“Doyler is a fantastic guy who has done a lot for this football club. His leadership from League Two into League One and making sure we were an established team was second to none, and everyone you speak to has nothing but good things to say about him. He’s a fantastic professional, how he conducted himself and kept himself fit to play to almost into his 40s.”

He added: “It’s a nice touch that he’ll be there on the day. Coventry City is a big part of his career. He still lives locally and has a big attachment to the club and always wants to see us do well. It will be good to see him there because he’s a great character.”
