Winchester, Kristjaan Speakman’s first signing at Sunderland, leaves after two-and-a-half years at the club having played a central role in helping the Black Cats win promotion to the Championship 12 months ago.

He only played once for Sunderland this season in the Carabao Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, before being loaned out to Shrewsbury for the season.

The 30-year-old’s contract is up this summer and he confirmed his imminent exit on social media last week, with Sunderland now finalizing their retained list – with 13 players leaving.

Sunderland moved to ensure they didn’t lose any first-team regulars for free this summer, with the club exercising year-long extensions in the contracts of Ross Stewart, Alex Pritchard, and Danny Batth earlier in the campaign.

Ex-Manchester United keeper Jacob Carney departs after two years on Wearside. The 22-year-old joined Sunderland in 2021 but made only one appearance in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Sunderland has also released Harrison Bond, Cameron Jessup, Ethan Kachosa, Nathan Newall, Owen Robinson, Thomas Scott, and Harrison Sohna.

Harry Gardiner, who has impressed for Sunderland’s Under-21s this season, is in discussions over a new deal with the Black Cats, as is Michael Spellman, who joined the club last summer.

Youth players Oliver Bainbridge, Marshall Burke, Henry Fieldson, Harrison Jones, Ben Middlemas, Ethan Moore Joseph Ryder have all been offered professional contracts, but second-year scholars Will Cain, William Dowling, Louie Salkeld, and Ben Williams will leave.
