Leicester City has turn to forgotten a talented young star to save millions in Championship rebuild

The midfielder has spent the season on loan with Championship side Watford but could return to the City fold in the summer after relegation from the Premier League.

Hamza Choudhury warms up before Leicester City's pre-season friendly with Burton Albion

Relegation to the Championship on the final day of the season for Leicester City means the club will now have to rebuild the squad with second-tier football in mind.

A total of eight first-team players are out of contract at the end of next month, with most expected to leave the club. Players will also move on in search of top-tier football, with the likes of James Maddison and Harvey Barnes expected to be among those to be sold in the summer transfer window in order to raise funds for incomings.

Youri Tielemans is likely to leave on a free transfer, while Nampalys Mendy is also out of contract. There have also been reports on the future of Wilfred Ndidi.

It means that central midfield could be an area that City look to add to in the summer transfer window, but they could already have a solution on hand that won’t cost anything in transfer fees.

Academy graduate Hamza Choudhury has spent the last season on loan with Championship side Watford after signing on loan from City last summer. The Hornets do have an option to buy the midfielder, but there is no guarantee they will trigger that option or if there are any conditions to it, meaning City could withdraw the option.

Before sending him on loan, City activated an option in Choudhury’s contract that saw it extended by a year to the summer of 2024. According to the Sun, Choudhury will now return ‘into the mix for City for next

He has been a regular for Watford throughout the 2022/23 campaign, making 37 appearances in all competitions. He started every game that he was fit to do so. The Championship experience that he now brings could be vital to a City squad that doesn’t have too many minutes in the league.

Speaking about his decision to join Watford in the summer, Choudhury revealed that it was all about getting regular game time. “As much as I love Leicester – I grew up there and it’s my home-town club – it was all about playing games,” he told the Watford Observer back in March.

“I was in for a few then out of the team, and I was really looking for stability and to be able to go out and play football, and enjoy it. I had a few Championship offers, and I wanted to choose somewhere where I thought I was going to get regular game time.

“It wasn’t really a case of rebuilding my career, it was more going somewhere that I could get a strong foothold in the game and then move forward.”

Regular game time is now something he may get more of back at City if he is to rejoin the squad in the summer as City prepares to play Championship football in 2023/24.
