Tottenham Hotspur Star Hugo Lloris Hints at summer exit
Hugo Lloris has all but confirmed that he wishes to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, 12 months before the end of his contract.
He did, however, acknowledge that in football, things are uncertain and that he could end up staying. But his comments hint that he is looking at an exit.
Speaking in an interview, the 36-year-old Frenchman told French newspaper Nice-Matin, via the Guardian:
“We are coming to an important moment, whether for the club or for me. It’s the end of an era. I have desires for other things, I will ask myself quietly to study what will be possible.”
Lloris joined Spurs in the summer of 2012 from Olympique Lyonnais and has since been our undisputed No. 1. For more than a decade, we haven’t had to worry about the goalkeeper situation because of him.
An end of an era
He may not have won a trophy with us but his legend status among the fanbase is surely confirmed. With 447 career appearances, Lloris is eighth on the list of most appearances for the club. He added:
“But I don’t forget that I still have a year of contract with Tottenham and that in football it is always difficult to predict what will happen. What is essential at the moment is to recover well from my injury. I’m on vacation but I continue to talk and do my training. My goal is to be on top in July, then we’ll see what the future holds.”
Lloris had two lengthy spells on the sidelines with injury this season, and not to mention, he wasn’t always world-class between the sticks. Even if he wishes to stay, there has to be an acceptance that we need a new goalie.
And we need it now. Lloris’ fitness and quality will not increase at the age of 36 and Fraser Forster, 35, is only good as a backup goalkeeper. It is hard to imagine him being our No. 1.
