Gordon, who played up-front for England, opened the scoring, before later posting on his Instagram account saying “Top of the group & into the Quarters!”

Everton’s Garner, who started the game at right-back, as he did in the Toffees’ final game of the season against Bournemouth replied “Good you!”

Anthony Gordon controversially left Goodison Park last January in a £45m deal with Newcastle United, meaning that he and Garner were only club teammates very briefly.

Garner can excite about Everton’s next season

22-year-old James Garner joined the Blues in a £15m deal from Manchester United, though injury ruled him out for much of the campaign.

However, once the versatile player had fully recovered, he established himself as a key player in Sean Dyche’s setup, featuring in the last 10 games of the season as Everton avoided relegation on the last day.

Composed with a keen eye for a pass, Garner could be an important part of Everton’s squad next season and at just 22 years old he could have a bright future at Goodison Park.

The versatile midfielder had a stellar 2021/22 campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest from Manchester United, scoring four goals and contributing 10 assists in all competitions.

Indeed, his performances aided in the City Ground hosting top-flight football after a 23-year absence, while prompting Everton to splash out for his signature.

Everton finds themselves in a state of flux this summer, both on and off the pitch, with big changes needed, though perhaps one thing fans can get excited about is the impact James Garner could have next season.
