Coventry City is set to benefit once again from James Maddison as the Sky Blues academy graduate moves closer to completing a £40million move to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Coventry-born player came up through the youth ranks at his hometown club, broke into the first team, and was eventually sold to Norwich City in 2016 for a deal that was understood to be worth between £2-3m with add-ons that would take to figures to up to £6m based on sell-on fees, first team appearances, and England caps.

Norwich sold Maddison to Leicester City for around £20m in 2018, whereupon they inserted their own sell-on clause. Coventry’s sell-on clause is understood to be at the 15 percent mark, meaning the Sky Blues are in line for a nearly half-a million-pound cash boost from the 26-year-old’s latest move, having bagged around £2.6m when he was sold to the Foxes.

The midfielder is set to undergo a medical with Tottenham after the clubs agreed on a deal that includes add-ons for appearances and achievements, according to The Telegraph.

Norwich is therefore set to cash in on the 15 percent sell-on clause they negotiated with the Foxes when Maddison moved to the East Midlands.

The clause means the Canaries see 15 percent of the profit Leicester has made on the player, which is £20m – the difference between what they originally sold him for and what Spurs are about to pay. That would see the Canaries bag £3m from the deal, while Coventry then gets a 15 percent cut of that, which equals £450,000.
