Leeds star in disbelief after completing Elland Road exit this month

Brenden Aaronson has told Union Berlin’s website that he is in disbelief that he will be playing Champions League football next season – having joined the Bundesliga side from Leeds United on Sunday, on a season-long loan.

Aaronson, 22, is the next departure from Elland Road. Leeds had already confirmed deals for Diego Llorente, who returns to Roma on loan. Robin Koch has gone to Frankfurt on loan – after Tyler Roberts and Alfie McCalmont went.

Bought for £25m, the USA star failed at Leeds. He came in for criticism due to his lack of physicality, scoring just once in his 40 outings for the Whites – perhaps twice, if the winner against Wolves in August counts as his own.

Union has decided to make a move for him, having qualified for the Champions League in fourth place last season. He spoke to Union after the loan was confirmed – stating he is stunned he will be playing in the Champions League.

“A year ago, I wouldn’t have believed that I would be here and able to play in the Champions League with Union. I’m looking forward to the year ahead with joy and confidence and want to help us have another successful season.”

Aaronson, who played in the Champions League before Leeds with Salzburg, is right to be a bit shocked. Joining a Leeds side that was simply looking to avoid relegation, suffering the drop, then back in the Champions League.

But that is the case. The USA star will be back in Europe’s elite competition next term. Whether he starts week in, week out remains to be seen. Union has gained success under the radar, without splashing a fortune on big stars.
