After the sale of Kasper Schmeichel to Nice, Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen competed for the number one spot last season in the Premier League, with Alex Smithies providing additional cover.

But given their lack of stability in this position they are looking for a new shot-stopper. The Daily Mail report (via Sky Sports) that they have identified Denmark U21 goalkeeper Hermansen as a potential new recruit, having established himself as the Brondby number one choice despite being just 22 years of age.

However, the Foxes aren’t the only admirers of Hermansen preparing for life in a new division, with Premier League new boys Burnley also having previously been linked.

But with the Clarets edging closer towards finalizing a move for former Bolton Wanderers loanee James Trafford, the outcome of this could influence their pursuit of the Dane, leaving Leicester in the clear.

A problem position…

Since club captain Schmeichel left the club last summer, Leicester City made a huge mistake in not bringing in a new number one. It was a decision that proved costly, with the Foxes having one of the worst defenses in the league last season and ultimately suffering relegation down to the Championship.

Ward and Iversen have experience but perhaps lack the quality to compete in the Premier League at this point in their careers. A drop down into the Championship could have helped with this, but Leicester City now looks to be going in a different direction with the pursuit of Hermansen.

Of course, there is no guarantee that the 22-year-old will come in as the first choice between the sticks, and could be merely providing competition for places. But given his age, he is likely to be a fixture in the first team for a number of years.
