Stricken Luton Town defender Tom Lockyer is in a conscious state and has been joined by his parents after falling to the ground with no one near him during the Championship play-off final

Tom Lockyer’s parents have rushed to be by his side after the Luton Town defender was stretchered off in the Championship play-off final.

Lockyer fell to the floor with no one near him just minutes into the match against Coventry City at Wembley. He received medical attention on the pitch before being carried away and replaced by Reece Burke.

His parents were watching on in the stands so were taken to be with him after the concerning incident. Sky Sports reporter David Craig provided an update.

He said: “Tom Lockyer was taken from pitch by the medical staff both from Wembley and Luton Town, he was conscious when he passed through the tunnel.

“He’s been taken to the medical room, we’re not yet aware of the nature of his distress, but his parents who are both here today have both come down from the stand and are in there with him. As soon as we have further information we’ll bring it to you.”

Sky Sports gave a further update at half-time as they reported Lockyer was on his way to hospital.

Moments before he appeared to collapse, Lockyer won a header from a corner which team-mate Gabriel Osho bundled home from an offside position, with no goal given as a result.

The Welsh centre-back was recently voted Luton’s Player of the Season having played an influential part in their third-placed finish. He registered four goals and one assist in 41 league games.

As he made his exit from the pitch, Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe said: “That is so sad. Lockyer epitomises what Luton are all about. For his final to end like this is devastating.”

Meanwhile, former Luton star Leon Barnett, who was working for BBC Three Counties Radio, said: “You don’t want to see Tom Lockyer going off.

“He’s been so good this season. When you see the Coventry medical staff helping, you know it’s serious. It’s never nice. Best wishes with him.”
