Tottenham’s pre-season friendly against Leicester is CANCELLED due to heavy rain in Thailand leaving puddles on the pitch, with groundstaff and officials deciding the surface is unplayable

Tottenham were due to face Leicester in a friendly in Thailand on Sunday

Torrential rain initially caused the pre-season match to be delayed

After a further inspection, the match was canceled due to unsafe conditions

Tottenham’s pre-season friendly against Leicester in Bangkok was called off after a torrential pre-match downpour left the pitch unplayable.

The heavens opened an hour before kick-off and the rain poured down relentlessly as the two teams warmed up, huge puddles forming on the pitch and the perimeter running track at the Rajamangala National Stadium.

Once the players returned to the sanctuary of the dressing room, about 30 minutes later, three people dashed with a couple of squeegee mops came out to try and remove some of the standing water. Two more emerged to repaint the white lines washed away.

All to little effect. The rain eased but still came down steadily. The original kick-off time of 5 pm ticked by without kick-off.

There was an on-pitch meeting and a ball was produced, rolled along the surface, and stopped abruptly in a puddle.

Ange Postecoglou chatted on the touchline with his Leicester counterpart Enzo Maresca. There was a pitch inspection at 5.25 pm local time which was only ever going to have one outcome.

The teams came out 15 minutes later to stroll around the stadium on a lap of thanks to the fans and disappeared back down the tunnel.

The game was off. A great shame for the supporters. Not good either for the preparation of the teams.

Postecoglou might be particularly annoyed since the next game in Singapore was supposed to be against Roma but the Italians pulled out. It is now against the local club team Lion City Sailors.
