Liverpool begins discussions with Aston Villa about a surprise raid; Newcastle follows suit for the star Klopp adores.

Liverpool and Newcastle have made matching moves for an Aston Villa star who Unai Emery won’t want to lose, per a report.

It’s been an eye-catching summer window for Aston Villa thus far, with Emery landing a series of high-profile additions.

Indeed, Youri Tielemans kicked things off upon joining as a free agent from Leicester City. Next up was center-back Pau Torres who Emery knows well from their time together at Villarreal.

The biggest and best was yet to come, however, with Villa fending off the Saudi riches of Al Nassr when completing a club-record £51.9m move for Moussa Diaby.

But according to the latest from Anfield Watch, Villa now have work to do to retain one of their fastest-rising stars.

Per the outlet, both Liverpool and Newcastle have held talks with the representatives of 21-year-old Jaden Philogene.

The versatile star can operate as a winger on either flank or on either side of a midfield three.

That versatility has reportedly caught the attention of Reds boss Jurgen Klopp. Indeed, the German is understood to have been wooed by the prospect of adding the Villa star to his ranks.

Philogene shone while loaned to Cardiff City last season and has featured regularly for Emery while back at Villa during pre-season. The attacker also scored in Villa’s 2-0 friendly victory over Fulham on July 26.

Anfield Watch state ‘it would not be easy’ for Newcastle or Liverpool to sign Philogene, primarily because Villa doesn’t wish to sell.

Nonetheless, that won’t stop the pair from trying and both clubs have opened discussions with the player’s camp.

Little else is known about the two clubs’ burgeoning pursuits of the player as yet. Clearly, this is a potential transfer in its infancy for the time being
