The Whites have had a long-standing interest in Swansea City forward Joel Piroe and Carlton Palmer feels he is a proven Championship goalscorer

Leeds United would be getting a ‘proven Championship goalscorer’ if they push the boat out to sign Swansea City striker Joel Piroe.

The Whites have long been linked with the Dutch forward, who has hit 41 goals in just 88 Championship appearances for the Swans. The 24-year-old has been a huge hit at the Liberty Stadium since signing from PSV in 2021, and notched a brace in their 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Northampton last week.

Leeds are desperate for more goalscoring power, with Patrick Bamford ruled out with injury, and Willy Gnonto making himself unavailable for the last two games after the club decided not to sell him. Georginio Rutter returned to action as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Birmingham, while Joel Gelhardt was asked to lead the line at St Andrews.

Piroe has been attracting plenty of interest given his strong form over the last two seasons, prompting Swansea to slap a reported £20m price tag on the Dutchman. However, former Leeds and England midfielder Carlton Palmer feels it would be money well spent.

“Leeds have a genuine interest in Swansea striker Joel Piroe,” Palmer told Football League World. “They need to bring a striker in, but Swansea do not want to sell and with interest from other clubs, Swansea are asking for a £20million price.

“Bamford has still not featured this season and this is a worry as he was injury-plagued last season, they need reinforcements in the attacking part of the pitch and it’s not going to be cheap. In Piroe, they have a Championship proven scorer if they could get him.”

Leeds take on West Brom and Friday night looking for their first Championship win of the season following a 2-2 draw with Cardiff City and the defeat at Birmingham.
