Tottenham prepare transfer move for 22-year-old Welsh international

Tottenham Hotspur will open talks with Nottingham Forest to sign Brennan Johnson

As per an exclusive in The Telegraph (subscription required), Tottenham Hotspur will open talks with Nottingham Forest this week to potentially sign Brennan Johnson.

The Welsh international is rated around £50m by Forest. The player was linked with Chelsea until very recently. But, the Blues dropped their interest and are looking at other players. He was a subject of interest for West Ham United, Aston Villa and Brentford as well.

Spurs, on the other hand, are willing to sign the 22-year-old before the transfer deadline day on Friday. They might offer cash plus players for the selling club to consider.

Centre-back Davinson Sanchez and winger Bryan Gil are likely to be the two players Ange Postecoglou’s club can offer to Forest in return for getting Johnson.

The Welshman is a talented forward who can play as an attacking midfielder or a winger on either side. He could be used as a false nine too.

He had an encouraging first season in the Premier League with Forest last time around by scoring eight and assisting three goals in 38 appearances.

Spurs have done good business to rejig the forward line this summer. They signed James Maddison from Leicester City, Manor Solomon from Fulham and made Dejan Kulusevski’s deal permanent.

They are understandably still in the market for more to make up for the loss of Harry Kane. Money won’t be an issue because of the fee the England captain’s departure generated.

The idea behind signing Johnson could be to push Heung-min Son up top and play the Welshman on the left wing, or vice versa.

What it would least do is give Postecoglou enough options to juggle through the season. The 22-year-old would definitely elevate the quality of the Spurs forward line in general.
