Goodison View: Everton appear to hijack Wolves pursuit to seal another first-team transfer

Everton appear to hijack Wolves transfer pursuit for Nico Elvedi

Everton are looking to hijack Wolves’ pursuit of Nico Elvedi this summer as both sides eye a move for the Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back.

TEAMtalk reported on Sunday (27 August) that Wolves have been pushing ahead to seal the deal to sign the 26-year-old Switzerland international before the window closes.

They have been cash-strapped by FFP this summer – a situation the Toffees found themselves in two summers ago under Rafa Benitez’s stewardship.

Gianluca Di Marzio, Sky Sports’ journalist on Sunday reported that Everton are in negotiations with the defender as well.

Unlike Wolves, they’re understood to have the resources to complete this signing and it may come down to that.

Everton have plenty of issues in multiple areas of the field but it’s evident to anyone seeing them that another centre-back is needed.

Jarrad Branthwaite coming in for Michael Keane certainly was an upgrade at the heart of defence but it’s still not what many would expect a Sean Dyche defence to look like.

While Branthwaite is good, he may do well being a backup for another season with someone like Elvedi partnering with James Tarkowski.

That pair will be a much more solid duo and hopefully can stop the Toffees from shipping in so many chances and goals.

In other Everton news, a club chief has revealed his plans to sign a first-team Toffees player imminently ahead of the deadline.
