TOWN LAND MARTYN WAGHORN FROM RANGERS

Mick McCarthy adds firepower to his striking options with the signing of Martyn Waghorn from Rangers, paying a substantial fee to land the forward

Town have today completed the signing of Martyn Waghorn on a two-year deal from Rangers for an undisclosed fee.

The Blues have fought off competition to land the forward and the 27 year-old will battle with Joe Garner, David McGoldrick and Freddie Sears for a striker’s berth.

The former Leicester man has today passed a medical and penned his contract and will be hoping to make his debut for the Blues in the Carabao Cup away to Luton tomorrow.

Waghorn started his career at Sunderland – his hometown club – and made a handful of appearances for the Black Cats before joining Leicester City on a permanent deal following a successful loan spell.

The striker was a hit at the King Power Stadium but fell out of favour once former England boss Sven Goran Eriksson took over as manager and he took in loan spells at Hull, Millwall and Wigan.

In 2015 the striker moved north of the border to join Rangers and fired the goals that landed the Gers the Scottish Championship title under Mark Warburton.

The frontman partnered Joe Garner up front at Ibrox last season and has now followed the former Preston man to Portman Road.

Martyn will wear the number nine shirt for the Blues this season.
