Wolves have confirmed a post-deadline day exit as well as a new contract.

Daniel Podence has left Wolves on a season-long loan to join Olympiacos in Greece, but he signed a new contract at Molineux before leaving.

The forward has not featured for Wolves this season and has left the club after three and a half years, although he has been granted permission to depart on loan after signing new terms until the summer of 2025, with the option of a further year.

Podence scored 16 goals in 105 games for Wolves after arriving on a four-and-a-half-year deal from Olympiacos in January 2020. That contract was slated to end next summer, but the club was unwilling to sanction a loan for a player with only one season remaining on their contract.

“It’s no secret that Daniel was keen to look at new options this summer, but nothing came that suited us or Daniel, but this is an opportunity for him to go back where he was and play European football, and he was great in understanding that for us to allow it, he had to sign a contract,” said sporting director Matt Hobbs.

“There’s still a chance Daniel returns to Wolves, but it was the right time to let him go and play this season.” He may either return after the season or we will negotiate with a player with a lengthier contract next summer. He was polite and didn’t argue; he was happy to protect the club. We’ll keep in touch during the season, and I want him to succeed so that he can either return to us in high form or maximize his value.

“It had been discussed since January, when Julen was here, that he might leave in the summer, but he wasn’t going to leave for anyone.” He had Premier League offers, but he didn’t want to go, but with this possibility, European football was a significant draw. It benefits all parties. They receive a good player on loan, and we avoid any charges for the rest of the season. It was a win-win situation for everyone.”

Wolves will play Liverpool in the Premier League on September 16. It is the first Premier League match after the international break, and the game begins at 12.30pm.
