Leeds United transfer news and speculations following the summer transfer window

The transfer window may have closed, but that doesn’t mean the gossip mill has ceased to provide new information. Following an eventful summer, news conversations have already taken place, and agreements are being finalized for transfers in January and beyond.

Leeds United had a difficult transfer window following their relegation from the Premier League. While they were able to bring in some excellent new players, they also had to sell several Elland Road fans, and as many as ten Whites players are currently out on loan.

Leeds did, however, have a successful recruitment push, bringing in nine players in a mix of cash purchases, free transfers, and loan deals, including Jol Piroe and Ethan Ampadu. Daniel Farke and his team had another target in mind, but given the recent update, it appears unlikely that they will get their man.

The Whites had apparently been in pursuit of Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley and had gone as far as tabling a £10 million offer for his services. The Hoops, though, are poised to offer the 22-year-old ‘better terms and an extension’ on his current contract, which runs until May 2026, according to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph.

Celtic turned down Leeds’ offer, and their approach certainly provided them with a quick kick to tie him down. During the international break, the club is anticipated to work on O’Riley’s new terms.

In January 2022, the midfielder joined the Hoops from MK Dons. O’Riley had four goals and 14 assists across all competitions in his first full season in Scotland and has continued in the same vein this season. The 22-year-old has two goals and two assists in four Scottish Premiership games, notably setting up Kyogo Furuhashi for the game-winning goal against Rangers on Sunday.
