Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds makes X-rated admission regarding Wrexham finances

In the first episode of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ Season Two, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney discussed the difficulties Wrexham would have faced if they had not been promoted last season.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were well aware of Wrexham’s fragile financial situation if they did not regain promotion to the Football League last season.

Since taking over the North Wales club, the Hollywood duo have lavished the cash with a slew of high-profile recruits. They were able to persuade some stars to drop down into non-league to assist the club in their quest for National League promotion.

Season 2 of the hit ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ show launched in the United States on Tuesday night on FX before being available on Disney+ in the United Kingdom on Wednesday. At the start of last season, Reynolds and McElhenney declared that they would be “f*****” financially if they did not win the league.

Reynolds explained the problem to fans while unveiling a slew of new signings: “We’re heavily invested in building this club, the stadium itself, and if we don’t get promoted this year, the club is completely, totally, and wholly unsustainable.”

“If our goal from the beginning was not just to win, not just to help bring some hope and optimism to the town, but to build a sustainable business that can continue long after we’ve gone,” McElhenney said.

“To put them in a position where they are no longer sustainable in any real way if they don’t get promoted this year goes against what our original promises were.”

“So it’s really ratcheted up the pressure, not just for us, but for the players on the field, the people in the community,” Reynolds said. We have to get promoted this year.”

McElhenney concluded, “From a financial standpoint, if we do not get promoted this year, we are f*****,” to which Reynolds sighed, “Yep, f***.”

Reynolds and McElhenney’s concerns were unfounded, as manager Phil Parkinson led the Red Dragons to the National League title in dramatic fashion. They won the sole automatic promotion position after a season-long struggle with Notts County.
