Report reveals that Spurs deal has been voted as the best signing of the summer by football agents

The Athletic polled 18 different football agents to determine the finest summer deal, with James Maddison receiving the most votes by far.

Maddison has started the season on fire, contributing four goals in the first four Premier League games, with the aggressive midfielder seemingly raising his game after joining Spurs.

Given the fees some other midfielders in the Premier League have commanded this summer, many have already expressed their shock at Spurs’ acquisition of the 26-year-old for under £40m.

The Maddison deal has already been hailed as the most cost-effective signing of the summer transfer window by a number of experts (Sky Sports), and the top agents in the industry concur.

Agents select James Maddison as the summer’s top deal.

The English international’s move to the Lilywhites was deemed the greatest deal of the window by nine of the 18 agents The Athletic questioned.

Declan Rice’s transfer from West Ham to Arsenal, which was second on the list, received only 3 votes.

Regarding the Maddison deal, one agent is cited as stating to the publication: “Even before the season had begun, I knew it was, pound for pound, the best bargain. Look at Cole Palmer when you consider some of the transfer fees for players that aren’t even proven.

“I know they (Chelsea) are buying potential, but the guy has only played about 15 league games and they’ve paid more for him than the Spurs did for Maddison.”

“He (Maddison) stayed at Leicester for too long, but Spurs looks like the right move for him,” another agent told the source. Spurs are buzzing under (Ange) Postecoglou, which hasn’t been the case for a few seasons, and a player like Maddison should benefit from that.

“It’s a shame (Harry) Kane left because they would have gotten along well, but sometimes a change is good for everyone.” Maddison appears to have regained her energy. And that was a good deal at a really nice price for the Spurs.”

Agents typically have a much better understanding of how in-demand certain players are in each window than the rest of us, and the fact that almost all of them are impressed by Tottenham’s acquisition of Maddison demonstrates just how well the North London club hierarchy has done to get the deal completed so early in the transfer window.
